Weight-loss drugmakers Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly, Pfizer, and Innovent Biologics are intensifying obesity awareness campaigns in China, using metro ads, gym events, and stadium promotions to circumvent restrictions on direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs. China's China — National Health Commission projects that over 65% of the population could be overweight or obese by 2030. Lilly led once-weekly GLP-1 sales on Alibaba's Tmall and JD.com in Q2, according to Jefferies. Novo launched the first once-weekly GLP-1 for weight management in late 2024, followed by Lilly in January 2025 and Innovent in July 2025; Pfizer's Xianweiying prescriptions began in April. Sales of GLP-1 weight-loss therapies could reach 30 billion yuan ($4 billion) in five to seven years, up from 3-4 billion yuan now, per Morgan & Morgan. Novo's new Greater China president Cai Yan acknowledged weaker communication versus rivals and is shifting to more accessible patient outreach, including a health exhibit with CCTV. Some campaigns, like Innovent and Meituan's subway billboards featuring a mascot named 'Madudu', may cross into drug advertising, according to legal experts. Lilly paused a similar campaign in India after regulatory concerns.
